Today is an important day for me. Day 100. I don’t like to post in the mornings, usually, because I haven’t made it through the day yet. Today is different, I KNOW that I won’t gamble today. Period. It’s only fitting that it lands on Valentine’s Day, because this has been a journey of learning how to love myself. It’s been a battle and some days the journey is harder than others, but I’ve made it. I think about the damage that I wrought over years and years, and then I look at the progress that I’ve made in these past three months and it’s amazing. I will preface by saying that my husband and I are extremely lucky, we are both essential workers and our income hasn’t been harmed by the Pandemic. I will say, though, my gambling beat all for emptying out our finances. Now, after three months of better choices our bank account needs a comma. It requires a comma. The debt is still there. But I’m slowly whittling that down. I would love to throw all of my new found liquidity at the debt. But I’m learning about the value of money again. I’m learning about the slow build of money; about saving and earning. Tonight I’m going to cook a kick ass Valentine’s dinner for my husband. We’ll eat and relax and I won’t feel like the entire meal is a massive apology for all of my fuck-ups. Every day can really feel like a challenge in the beginning, but it gets easier. It does. Remember, though, that addiction comes from some place. Gambling is a coping skill, an unhealthy coping skill, but a coping skill. Unless you are willing to find out what you are coping with and develop other, healthy coping skills, the shadow will always be lurking over you. Now I can see the shadow, but know to turn on another light. submitted by /u/punkrain [comments]

Gambling is an important factor in the game of poker. It is risking something of value (usually money) in the hope of gaining a reward. While skilled poker players tend to do better overall, luck is an inherent part of the game. Good players realize they cannot control luck – good or bad; but they have learned to influence it to their benefit. This, by contrast, is not possible with slots or many other casino games, the kinds of which you’d play at sites like www.svenskaonlinecasino.info. While those games can be just as enjoyable as poker to many people, they’re essentially completely luck-based, whereas poker undoubtedly features numerous elements of skill.
Because of the gambling aspect, however, some poker players are perpetual losers. And a significant number of those will unfortunately go off the deep end to become habitual gamblers, getting themselves into all sorts of difficult situations and problems. This happens often enough so that, over the years, several non-profit groups have been organized to help people fight off compulsive gambling. Even so, remember that it is your responsibility as a player. Like any adult, you are accountable for your actions – only you.
A compulsive (pathological) gambler is a person who cannot resist his impulses that can lead to ruining his life and sometimes to a life of crime. As a result, he is likely to suffer many personal and financial problems. Compulsive gambling is regarded as a mental disorder leading to continuing impulsive gambling despite the negative physical, psychological, and social consequences. He is preoccupied with gambling, spending more and more time and money on it, and chasing his growing losses. He has a gambling problem!
Responsible Gambling Guidelines
Published by the National Council on Problem Gambling, a set of guidelines is available to help susceptible poker players and compulsive gamblers to overcome their problem. These guidelines include the following, to which I will add my comments:
If you are a loser, try to think of the money you lose as part of your entertainment. Set a dollar limit and stick to it. It may take some self-discipline and self-control, but it is worth the effort.
Win or lose, set a time limit for playing your game, and stick to it.
Do not borrow money to play. If you cannot afford it, do not play.
Do not let gambling interfere with your home life, or become a substitute for family, friends, or your career.
Do not chase losses. Chances are you will lose even more trying to recoup your losses. (For that matter, while playing poker, be sure that your cards offer plenty of outs after the flop – six or more, so you do not chase during the hands you play.)
Never use gambling as a way to cope with emotional or physical pain. Do not play if pain is disturbing you during the game. It is important to focus on the game and your opponents.
Know the warning signs of problem gambling and listen to their message. Is it time to quit for the day?
It is your responsibility!

08:0214 FebJeffery Bernard Morris, the accused murderer of poker player Susie Zhao, has had his case remanded to its originating court as prosecutors continue fleshing out an additional charge of felony murder against him.Morris’s trial in an Oakland County (Michigan) Circuit Court was scheduled to get underway this month, with the 60-year drifter and convicted sex offender already facing a charge of premeditated, first-degree murder in the death of Zhao, whose bound and burned body was discovered in the parking lot of an Oakland County nature refuge on July 13, 2020.However, Circuit Court Judge Martha Anderson ordered the case returned to the 52-2 District Court where charges were first filed so the additional charge or charges can be appended to the case. A felony murder charge can be added when the murder occurs during the commission of another felony; in this case, investigators had ready evidence of both kidnapping and sexual assault, and a charge or charges of that nature may also be considered.Morris was identified as Zhao’s likely killer from phone records and surveillance video obtained by investigators, after the two had met at a motel in White Lake Township, just west of Dearborn, Michigan. Officers tracked down Morris, who already had a long list of convictions on various charges in Michigan and Florida.Morris was denied bond at his initial court appearance and remains held in an Oakland County jail. The remanding of his case means that his initial trial date has been cancelled. No new date for his trial on the expanded charges will be set until those charges are finalized by prosecutors.Did you like this article?Tweet

08:3913 FebPoker pro – turned – MMA fighter Terrence Chan and Mike ‘Timex’ McDonald have fallen out this week, the pair clashing on Twitter with each accusing the other of poor behaviour connected to bets on the Bill Perkins-Landon Tice heads-up challenge.Chan claimed he knew nothing of Perkins giving his young opponent a 9BB/100 head start in their upcoming ‘Heads up for Soulz’ match when he placed bets on McDonald’s PokerShares site.McDonald, however, seemed to believe he was being played by Chan, not believing such an experienced pro could have believed the odds offered were for a straight up encounter, rather than a handicap contest. However, how he went about discussing things with Chan was called into question when he opened their correspondence with “Are you dumb?”That was simply unprofessional according to many, no matter that the pair have been friends for some time – though perhaps no longer as the dispute grew arms and legs, McDonald accusing Chan of angleshooting him.Chan claims he wasn’t angling his friend, having asked several friends about the “strange” line being offered. He also believes that an email he received from PokerShares explaining the mistake was “not a ‘clarification’–it’s changing the rules of the bet.”A number of well-known pros, as well as an army of regular Twitter poker fans, soon lined up to take sides.VeniVidi1993, who lost to Phil Galfond in their PLO Challenge match last year, was on McDonald’s side.“Not sure why I feel like responding to this message, but I think you are making a pretty big fool out of yourself. I don’t know @MikeMcDonald89 personally and I would respond exactly the same if I was in his position.”Daniel Colman also seemed to be on Mike’s side. “Seems pretty obvious the bet is on the challenge winner, so the handicap is included,” he tweeted. The man most famous for his $15million+ scoop of the 2014 Big One for One Drop win, added: “Either way, if you consider Mike a friend of 20 years, why not message him first to clarify instead of repeatedly clicking max to try and snipe some EV in what u hope to be a loophole.”WPT champ Patrick Serda took the opposite viewpoint, siding with Chan: “Wait WTF is everyone talking about that HU challenge insinuates 9bb/100? Mike makes and changes lines for a living…”“Timex” also took to the 2plus2 forum, posting: “Phrasing this challenge is somewhat challenging in that we want wording that helps those uninformed on terms while not misrepresenting the situation to those who are informed on terms.”With McDonald refusing Chan’s offer to arbitrate, and then apparently showing proof that Chan also knew about the 9BB headstart when he posted his bets, it looks like a points win for Timex in this feud.Did you like this article?Tweet
Last December, a Connecticut lawmaker said that “You can bet on” sports betting becoming a legal activity in 2021. On Wednesday, the state’s governor echoed those sentiments and made it seem like all forms of online gambling would be legal as well.
Gov. Ned Lamont released his two-year state budget Wednesday and he allotted $47.3 million in tax revenue from the second year of expanded gambling, according to a report from the Hartford Courant.
Based on comments made by Lamont at the time of the release of his budget proposal, it appears expanded gambling includes both retail and online sports betting, as well as online casino gaming.
“Our neighboring states are moving forward with sports betting and iGaming, and Connecticut should not leave these opportunities for other states to benefit from our inaction,” said Lamont. “My administration has been in active negotiations with our tribal partners to bring the state’s gaming economy into the digital age. And I am submitting legislation which reflects what I believe to be the best bet in ending this stalemate of inaction in a way which is in the best interest of the entire state.”
Both Rhode Island and New Hampshire already offer online and brick-and-mortar sports betting, and New York seems set to expand its sports betting market after recent comments made by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Pennsylvania has also seen increased revenues after legalizing all forms of online gambling.
The tribal partners Lamont was referring to is the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, which runs Foxwoods Resort Casino and the Mohegan Tribe, which is in charge of Mohegan Sun. Currently, nearly all forms of gambling, outside of the lottery and off-track betting, runs through those two tribes.
The pandemic has hurt the brick-and-mortar revenue of those two tribes’ casinos, which in turn has put a dent in the state coffers. Connecticut is facing a $1 billion deficit at the time of Lamont’s budget proposal.
Lamont made comments in December that seemed like he was ready for Connecticut to mirror the models in place in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
“If we found out anything in the course of this horrible COVID cycle, more and more of the world is going virtual,” said Lamont at the end of last year. “More and more of the world is going online. That’s tele-health and tele-learning, but it’s also iGaming and sports betting. And I don’t think you want Connecticut left behind.”
With any proposed gambling expansion, those two entities will be at the center of the negotiations. The Courant’s report says that the governor and the tribes have been in “long-running talks” about whether the tribes will have exclusive rights, like they currently do, for any form of gambling expansion.
Foxwoods announced a partnership with daily fantasy sports giant DraftKings at the end of 2020, which gives the Boston-based online sportsbook a track to the Connecticut market regardless of any pending agreements.
Today is day one—a day of reckoning, I hope. It’s been a long, arduous road coming to this realization. I’m in pain. Both mentally and emotionally. I’ve spent years recklessly spending money and despite having one narrow miss after another, I’ve managed to avoid hitting rock bottom—until now, that is. I own a nice home, drive a nice car, and have nice things. But at what expense? I feel overwhelmed and deflated. Down-trodden and lost. If I continue down this path, all of those things I’ve worked so hard for will disappear in a matter of moments. What started as winning thousands had turned into a fast downward spiral, draining most of my savings and leaving me in a pile of debt. After losing $8k yesterday, I knew it was time for a major adjustment. When you’re up it seems like you’re unstoppable but when you’re down, the walls really start to close in on you. You start chasing the money, desperately trying to catch up—to make yourself whole again. You’ll blame the losses on bad luck and swear that luck had to change at some point—that you’re due. It’s all a ruse, though. A vicious and repetitive cycle—a complex curse cast upon you by a cruel and wicked temptress. A devil in a red dress. She’s disarming, alluring, and filled with promise but underneath it all hides a dark fucking pit of despair—an all-consuming abyss. Here I am: swallowed up, withered bones and all. I’m just hoping it spits me out on the other side where things aren’t so hazy—so damn empty. I keep thinking “what have I done?” Even more so, “WHY have I done this?” Exclaiming to myself that I don’t have a problem and that it’s just a bad run of luck. What a crock of shit. I’m tired of lying to myself and, at last, it’s time to confront this demon. I feel absent in my personal life and totally consumed by my losses. I can barely face myself at this point and, honestly, I have no clue why I’m turning to Reddit. I guess I just need to dump all of this somewhere in the anonymous world—a place others are hurting, too, and maybe hope to find some solace and clarity in an unlikely place. I can overcome this. I can live with myself and my mistakes and move on to a better place in this world. It’s just going to take some time and diligence. Stay strong, fellow degens. We’re better than this. submitted by /u/wit_of_the_staircase [comments]
